Canajoharie PTA launches pilot program to provide all K-5 school supplies for 2017-18

The Canajoharie Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) will provide free traditional school supplies such as pencils, pens, crayons, glue, notebooks, looseleaf paper, pocket folders, for all Canajoharie kindergarten through fifth grade students for the 2017-18 school year.

Students will still need to bring appropriate clothing and footwear for Physical Education classes, a lunch box if they intended to bring a meal, and a book bag. A student may still bring their own supplies from home if they so choose.

“We are very excited that our students will have the tools they need to learn at hand the moment they walk in the door this fall,” said East Hill Elementary School Principal Stacy Ward. “We are so thankful for the PTA’s generosity.”

Middle and high school students will still need to bring their own supplies this fall. Lists of needed materials can be found on the district’s website, canajoharieschools.org

The PTA’s pilot program comes in response to parent and teacher feedback about confusion over required supplies, family and district budgetary restrictions, and research into practices at other school districts.

Funding for the initiative came from the PTA's annual Gertrude Hawk chocolate fundraiser.

PTA officials and school administrators will evaluate the effectiveness of the program at the end of the school year to determine if it will continue in 2018-19.
