We're off to see the wizard!
The Middle School Drama Club culminated their
year with a presentation of an adaptation of “The Wizard of Oz”
written by L. Frank Baum and adapted by Lynne S. Schwartz. The
play was performed for students in grades 4-8 and for the
parents.
The
Drama Club, under the advisors Claudia Morris and Claudia
Rockwell, began the year exploring and practicing a variety
acting techniques including ensemble acting, spontaneity,
storytelling, nonverbal communication, and characterization. As
the year progressed, they performed several small-group skits
related to the Middle School Character Education Program, to the
middle school students.
The final project of the year was the
presentation of “The Wizard of Oz”—the adventures of Dorothy and
her friends on their trip down the yellow brick road. The
project was especially beneficial because, in addition to
performing, they were involved in painting the set, which was
designed by Claudia Rockwell and stage crew activities.
The advisors hope that, through these
activities, the members are not only learning about acting, but
also about compromise, diversity, and combining their efforts
with the efforts of others to achieve a common goal.
